Worlds Unlike Our Own

Happy Sunday! I hadn’t originally planned on a post for today at all, but I came across this really cool tag yesterday by Surbhi @ Bemused Bibliophile and Susan @ Novel Lives, and considering the final season of Game of Thrones starts tonight, this is just perfect timing! I’m a HUGE fan and I couldn’t be more excited that the show is finally back!

Do I need to look any further than Harry Potter for this? From Hedwig to Crookshanks, the characters’ pets were so much more and they all had very important parts to play in the story.

Jamie Lannister
A character whose redemption you were rooting for

Honestly, the Darkling from the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. He was just such a complex villain and a redemption arc for him would have been absolutely amazing – but given the twist at the end of King of Scars, I’d say that’s not happening anytime soon. It would have been really interesting to read though!

Clegane Brothers
The best & worst sibling dynamics
you have ever read

Best: Ooh, this one’s easy! Best sibling dynamic I’ve ever read is definitely the Blackthorn siblings from The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare. I love how the five of them are so supportive of each other and how close-knit this family is – something especially visible in Queen of Air and Darkness.

Worst: For worst, I’m going to have to say Katherine, Arsinoe and Mirabella from Three Dark Queens by Kendare Blake. I haven’t read Two Dark Reigns yet, and I know Arsinoe and Mirabella are on the same side now, but this is still the most messed up dynamic I’ve read, considering at one point or another they’re all intent on killing each other.

Ned Stark
A character whose death you did not see coming/
most shocking death in a book, movie or TV series

Jason Grace from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. As of The Burning Maze, Jason is dead and I don’t think it has quite sunk in for me, even a whole year later. It was completely out of the blue and I definitely did not see it coming!

Ramsay Bolton
A character you will gladly see die

Zara Dearborn from The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare. As a character who is just an all around awful human being, not least because she nearly ruined that nice happily ever after ending (if there’s such a thing in Shadowhunter world), I was quite upset that she didn’t get her just desserts and I would not mind in the slightest if she were to die in the upcoming series.

Rhaegar Targaryen
A character who you think is
gravely misunderstood

Minya from Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Although she was a complete terror in the first book, my suspicions about her were proven right in Muse of Nightmares!

Jorah Mormont
A character who you think is
the epitome of loyalty

Aedion Ashryver from the Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Ever since it was revealed in Heir of Fire that Aedion has been loyal to his cousin all those long years and never stopped believing that she was alive and would return one day, he has been one of my favourite characters in the series.

Jon Snow
A character who has leadership thrust upon them

There are tons of characters for this prompt, but I’m going to go with one from a more recent read of mine, Hesina from Descendant of the Crane by Joan He. The most interesting part of this book for me was to see how, upon unexpectedly ascending to the throne, Hesina learns to maneuver the delicate nuances of court life while balancing her personal need for justice along with being the queen her people need.

Bran Stark
A character or book with a very
good disability representation

I’m going to have to agree with Surbhi on this one and say Chaol Westfall in Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas. Ever since book 3 in the Throne of Glass series, his character was becoming less and less interesting for me, but Tower of Dawn was a complete surprise with the amazing character growth. Chaol’s struggles and the strength he displayed felt so very real and they were so well depicted.

Khal Drogo
A character you think is hard from the
outside but a big softie from the inside

Jace Herondale from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series is such a perfect example of this. He initially comes off as extremely arrogant, egotistical and sarcastic (all of which he is!), but as we get to know him better, there’s a whole other side to him.
