Do you ever put off the books you actually want to be reading? What do you end up reading instead? Why do you put off the books that you would rather read for other stories?
I do this all the time and I’m so glad to hear this is something other readers do too! When I put off reading a book I really want to read it’s usually because I have some other books I need to finish first to stay on track with review commitments. I might be in the middle of another book or series, and if I put it on hold, I know it’ll probably be atleast a week before I return to it again which will throw everything off schedule.
Picking up books I really want to read also depends a lot on what other books I’ve been reading around the same time. I try my best to vary the books I pick up so that I’m not reading the same genre for too long, or reading too many massive books back to back which for me, is basically the recipe for a reading slump. Sometimes, I need to take the time to fit in an easy, light hearted read or two before I start an epic fantasy just to balance things out.
Then there are those books which I know are going to give me some version of a book hangover for atleast a couple of days and I try to read those kinds of books over the weekends so I have the week to process it. The final reason why I put off reading a book I really want to read is because I know I’ll love it and I’m not really ready to check it off my list – after all, you can’t get the experience of reading a great book for the first time twice.
Do you treat reading books you’re excited as a reward?
Absolutely! I use this method as a sort of motivational system when very highly hyped books are about to be released, because it’s so hard to concentrate on any other book around that time, so setting some goals like a few specific books or some blog related work to complete restores a little efficiency. Most recently, I did this with Chain of Iron. I held off reading it for 4 whole days after I got my copy because I was in the middle of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and also struggling through A Darkening of Shadows. I designated Chain of Iron as my reward for finishing all the books on my currently reading shelf, and it certainly did the job!
