Do you have any book boyfriends/girlfriends?
This is such a fun prompt! I definitely have book boyfriends, too many to count over the years, though admittedly, only some last longer than a few months and they’ve become lesser in number of late, as I generally like how the romantic plotlines tend to work out nowadays. There have been characters I adore, but I end up liking the pairing just as much. There are a few long time favourites I have though. Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices is one and has been since I was 13 or 14 (basically from the minute I first got my hands on Clockwork Angel). Rhysand from ACOTAR is another. Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables series was probably my earliest.
What makes you fall in love with them? Is there anything all your favorite book boyfriends/girlfriends have in common?
I’ve never actually given much thought into why a certain character is my book boyfriend. I guess it’s a mix of their personality and their relationships with the people around them. Like Rhysand – he was interesting in book one, but he became a favourite of mine only in book 2 when we were introduced to the Court of Dreams which reveals his real personality. How they look does play a role, but not a major one since I don’t look at much fanart and just rely on the descriptions in the book to get an idea of their appearance. Now that I think of it, I do seem to like the sarcastic, snarky and occasionally the dark and brooding type too – basically, complex characters that make me curious to know more about them. Of course, charm always helps 😄, but I think I really need to feel attached to a character and completely invested in their fate.
Do you prefer they come from certain genres?
I don’t really have a particular preference, but I’m pretty sure all of mine are from fantasy novels – unsurprising, as nearly 70% of books I read each year are of that genre. Of the other genres I do read, like thrillers or historical fiction, the stories are usually either too fast or too complex to be thinking about much else, so from that aspect, fantasy novels, where you get time to take in the world and understand the characters is often likely to have book boyfriend material.

Sarcastic characters are the best! They make the dialogue so much more fun. I haven’t read that book yet, it’s on my TBR though and I’ve heard so many good things about it!

I’m currently obsessing over Ren from Tiger’s Curse, although I love who he ends up with as well. Such a beautiful character… 💖😻🤩

I wasn’t familiar with this series so I looked it up, and it sounds so amazing! No idea how I missed it back when I was reading the author’s other series Reawakened, definitely have to check it out. Thanks for reading!

Aha all of mine are from fantasy novels for sure. I think I’d be with you on the dark and brooding though – which I never really thought about until you mentioned it, I feel so called out haha! Love this.

Thanks for reading! It was funny noticing the things they had in common when I didn’t think I had a type at all at first 😂

Rhysand 100% book BF material. I love a good shameless flirt or complicated guy character who I guess u could say was more “moody and complex” lol!

I am very fickle and I have had many book boyfriends but over time I do tend to forget about them. Rhysand is the exception to that rule. I feel like me and Rhys are pretty exclusive by now!
