Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. Today’s topic is What makes you like a character?
Are there any physical qualities you look for in a character? What personalities tend to draw you to characters? Are there any archetypes you prefer, are you always falling for the villain? What makes you like characters?
As far as physical qualities go, I don’t have any particular preferences. It’s usually the personality that is the deciding factor. I like characters that are intelligent and determined. It’s more fun if the character takes an active role in advancing the plot and has some real impact on the story rather than just sitting there passively while events happen around them.
It’s also important to me that a character is realistic and flawed, but at the same time, still likable. While I can certainly appreciate a unlikable character if it’s one of the driving aspects of the story, for the most part, I prefer that the main character is at least somewhat likable since it usually has a major effect on my reading experience. I’m also very fond of morally gray characters – they’re so much fun, as are antiheroes. Above all, I think the characters I enjoy most are those I can relate to well – I do adore characters who are much of a bookworm as I am!
As for falling for the villain…well, it does happen once in a while. More often however, I end up sympathizing with the villain, especially if they had a troubled past that led them to do bad things, or perhaps it’s a gray situation where the villain isn’t that much of a villain at all or the ultimate villain redemption arc.

I like grey characters too. They add an extra dimension to the otherwise two dimensional typical characters.
