Reading enough to keep a blog running can be stressful in the best of times, but what happens when other hobbies start to get in the way? Do you force yourself to prioritize reading even when you want to be drawing/knitting/playing music/watching a new show/gaming?
This was so hard to balance in the first few months when I started blogging. Sometimes I tend to get a little too ambitious with my reading goals and forget to leave time for other things. Now however, I make it a point to not force myself to prioritize reading unless it’s an ARC as I’ve found that mood reading keeps me much happier. Besides, forcing myself to sit down with a book is the easiest path to a nasty reading slump.
Has another hobby ever made you miss a reading goal?
Yes, it’s usually something like a new TV show I can’t resist binging.
What is your strategy to balance reading among your other hobbies?
Roughly allocating portions of my free time each day to different activities has been really helpful in balancing my hobbies. For example, on weekdays, from the time I finish work to approximately 8pm is reading time which usually gives me a good 2 hours each day, and after 8pm is for any other hobbies I want to work on. I keep my weekends more flexible and just concentrate on what I feel like doing – in fact, sometimes I don’t read on weekends at all.
