Let’s Talk Bookish: Do bloggers owe their readers and vice versa?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. Today’s topic is Do bloggers owe their readers and vice versa?

Do bloggers owe their readers anything? Do bloggers deserve anything from their readers? Do you think there’s a specific etiquette that bloggers/readers should follow when interacting?

This topic is not one I’ve ever really given much thought to, but at a basic level, I don’t think that bloggers owe their readers anything or vice versa – beyond common courtesy that is.

Many people blog as a hobby, which provides a lot of freedom with regards to what they post and how frequently they do so. Sure, it’s important to try to post quality content, but there’s no contract there, so bloggers certainly don’t owe their readers anything. For a bigger blog, especially ones that are monetized or have paid subscription, I would say yes, they definitely do owe their readers whatever content they’ve promised.

The only real etiquette for blogger/reader interaction, in my opinion, is to be kind and respect each other’s opinion. The bookish community is filled with people of varying reading tastes and I love seeing the differing thoughts that readers may have on the same book and finding new books for my TBR.

Do you as a blogger pressure yourself to provide certain things to your readers? Do you do certain things when you read a blog post?

Blogging is a hobby for me, so I make it a point to write about topics that I enjoy and while I do have a set schedule, if there is a day when I can’t or don’t feel like posting for whatever reason, I have the freedom to skip the day. It took a long time for me to understand that, since in the initial few months, I stressed myself out a lot trying to keep up. Now, the only things I focus on is that my content is well written, without any grammatical mistakes, that my book reviews are honest. If I’m about to be away for a few days or a longer hiatus, I make it a point to let my readers know ahead of time.

For a blogger, likes and comments from readers are wonderful to receive. They can be so motivational and they are certainly a large part of what made me want to continue blogging, so on the blogs I follow regularly, I always try to like the post and comment on them from time to time.

I think bloggers owe their readers honesty and genuine thoughts. Apart from that it is a platform for creativity and fun.

Love your thoughts on what the most important aspect of blogging etiquette is! Informing readers and providing the best writing you can to them while maintaining your values and morals is definitely essential to building a space where people can connect. 🙂
