How much time do you spend on making your blog look nice? Is it more about making it functional? Did it take a long time to set it up? Are you still changing it around?
During the initial setup, I spent a lot of time thinking about what combination of base colors I wanted to use, a logo, a name, and the general layout of my blog. I think I spent nearly a week on that initial stage. After that however, my focus has mainly been on content over appearance. I do check my blog frequently to make sure all the links are working and all my widgets are up to date and so on.
Yes, I do change things around from time to time, but they’re mostly related to blog post structure and presentation. For example, I completely changed the format of my monthly wrap up posts at the start of 2021 to use some of the new widgets that became available with the WordPress block editor and give it a neater look.
Do you ever feel like your blog design is not properly appreciated (for example, are most people reading your posts via the Reader and not actually visiting your blog)? What are the best tools you use to customize the look of your blog?
I used to worry about the design of my blog initially but when I started looking at the statistics, I found that most of the time, my posts are being viewed either through the Reader or via mobile, which shows a highly optimized view of the site. Once I figured that out, I stopped worrying so much about how my blog looks and concentrated more on making it intuitive to navigate in terms of menu items, widgets, tags etc. There are some customizations I’ve been thinking of, which time-consuming aside, I haven’t put them in for exactly this reason, since a large chunk of my readers would likely never see them.
It doesn’t really worry me that much that most of the views I get are not from readers directly visiting my blog – though it would be nice of course – because outside of the times I’m blog hopping and commenting, I use Reader myself to look through the latest posts from the blogs I follow. It would be way too hard to keep track of so many sites and Reader has them all conveniently in one place.
I have a wordpress.com site at the moment, so I’m pretty limited in what I can customize, but if I do decide to go self hosted at some point, I would probably spend some more time on the aesthetics of my blog.
