Let’s Talk Bookish: How do you decide what books to borrow or buy?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts. Today’s topic is: How do you decide what books to borrow or buy?

Do you buy a lot of books? Do you borrow books from a library, or from friends?

Not at all, I usually buy only 2-3 books a year. Most of the books I read are from the library, both physical and digital. I don’t really borrow from friends because I can almost always find what books I want in the library.

What do you look out for in books you buy? Are there any book genres you typically buy more of?

I only buy books I’ve already read and really enjoyed, so I know for sure I would reread them over and over. I occasionally do buy brand new books or pre-order when it’s by an author whose writing I trust will be good or from a series I’m collecting. I have a running list of books I want to add to my shelves, so I’m always on the lookout for good deals on them, or for a specific edition if I have one in mind. Most of the books I buy are of the fantasy genre, though I do enjoy collecting special or collector’s editions of classics too. The latest addition to my shelves is a gorgeous leather bound Jane Austen collection that had been on my to-buy list for several years.

Do the types of books that you buy differ from the types of books you typically borrow? Do you prefer to borrow or to buy books?

While fantasy novels are what I tend to borrow and buy most, I explore a lot of other genres when I borrow books. Historical fiction novels in particular, are ones I rarely buy since I don’t typically reread those, but I borrow them from the library quite frequently. Overall, while I like buying books, I prefer to borrow them at the end of the day because it’s just so much more practical considering the number of books I read in a year.

Wonderfully done, Raji! I love that you’re practical about your books!
I’m with you on buying books.. I try to only buy the ones I know I already love or am a huge fan of the author.

Thanks Sheri! Unhauling books is one of my least favorite things to do, so I find it easiest to buy books I definitely want to hold on to!

        Any time!
I have this terrible habit of wanting to hold onto them all so I don’t usually ‘unhaul’ books.. I’m working on it. 🤭

I enjoy posts where I’m given the opportunity to read about other book lovers. I am like you and either utilize Netgalley for books and audiobooks or my local library and always in digital form. I also tend to only buy books I’ve loved and want to re-read or share with my parents who are non-digital. Thanks for sharing Raji!

Agreed! Public libraries are such a boon for readers, especially the vast online collection that is available!
