Let’s Talk Bookish: Books on Vacation

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts. Today’s topic is: Books on Vacation.

What books do you like to bring on vacation? Do you bring any books at all?

I do bring books on vacation, though it’s more than often just my Kindle. I prefer more lighthearted books when on holiday that are easy to read. One of my favorite books to read (and reread) on vacation in recent years is Red, White and Royal Blue.

What kind of books do you think are good for a vacation? How much time do you usually have to read on vacation? What does an ideal vacation with a book look like?

It depends a lot on the type of vacation. If you’re like me and are heading out the door first thing in the morning and returning late into the evening, there’s pretty much no time to be found for reading. I can only manage to read during travel times. On my trip last month, I literally pulled out my Kindle twice and it was while I was waiting at the airport and when I was on the flight. So for my style of travel, I like to take fast paced, light reads, or rereads because I won’t be so glued to the book that I spend my entire vacation reading. I typically don’t bring high fantasy novels or thrillers along on any vacation because they’re the exact opposite of a relaxing read. If your vacation style is slower paced, like a beach holiday perhaps, almost any type of book would work, though I would still prefer the more lighthearted reads that don’t require too much focus.

My ideal vacation with a book…would be a staycation. When I’m on an actual vacation, I try to disconnect from my usual routine, most particularly social media and blogging, and just enjoy the holiday and change of scenery. In fact, I’m usually on hiatus when on holiday and that does include reading for my blog. So the only time I’m actively reading on holiday would be one where I’m not travelling at all and can curl up on my favorite couch and binge read a book or three.

Great idea for a post! I’m with you. When I’m somewhere other than on a staycation I’m out and about exploring and taking a break from reading. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jodie! Agreed, I have plenty of reading time at home, so it seems almost wasteful to spend time on it while on vacation when I have the chance to explore new places!
