Let’s Talk Bookish: What are your thoughts regarding reading challenges?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts. Today is a choose your own adventure day, so the topic I’ve picked from previous prompts is: What are your thoughts regarding reading challenges?

Have you ever taken part in a reading challenge? Did you enjoy it?

In the first year or two of blogging, I took part in quite a few reading challenges as I was trying to expand my TBR into genres outside my comfort zone. It was fun then, but it started to become stressful later. Keeping with the prompts each month was one thing but finding a title that actually fit the prompt on my shelves (which often wasn’t there) was much harder for me and it took a lot of time to find one that sounded interesting enough to pick up.

Do you think reading challenges help you read more, or do they add unnecessary stress?

Reading challenges are great for those trying to develop a reading habit, or perhaps regain one. It can also be helpful for those trying to read new types of books or genres for which themed challenges in particular are great. Apart from that, the generic challenges can also be fun once in a while, like beat the backlist for example. Chosen carefully, I think reading challenges can be very beneficial, but I think it takes a level of commitment to stick to it without getting stressed out.

We only do a standard read at least 50 books a year challenge. It’s because we’re mood readers so following a prompt can be difficult.

I can’t remember them exactly but I know at some point I’ve taken part in a few reading challenges! Though now I’m more picky about them because I’ve become such a mood reader and struggle sticking to particular books sometimes. I like what you said about how it helps to build a habit, whether its for reading certain books from your to-read list or discovering new ones.
