Let’s Talk Bookish: Do you use your local library?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts. Today topic is Do you use your local library?

Do you have a local library you go to often? Does your school/did your school have a library?

Yes! My local library is just a short walk away and I’m there several times a week, whether it is to pick up holds, drop off books or to simply browse the shelves for my next read. My school did have a library – my elementary and middle schools especially had great collections and I often spent hours there. My high school library was much more limited and the titles were largely academic rather than for leisure reading and in university, while I did visit the library frequently to study there, I didn’t really check out many books.

What are your favorite things about libraries?

My favorite thing about libraries is the mood – it’s so quiet and peaceful, and it’s lovely to just find a comfortable chair and read, surrounded by books with no one to disturb me. I also love being able to browse the shelves and finding something I might not have come across at a bookstore.

Are there certain books you borrow from your local library more or less often than others?

My library is the first place I turn to for new titles and I often place them on hold as soon as they’re available in the catalogue, often several months before release date. In terms of types of books, the longer the book, the more I prefer to read a physical copy over a digital one. Historical fiction titles by some of my favorite authors are often over the 500 page count and I always get those from the library. There are also some authors in other genres whose books I like to get from the library for similar reasons, like Cassandra Clare or Sarah J Maas. Finally, if I know in advance that a book is slower paced or if I need to slow down and pay attention to the story more than usual, I choose to get those from the library because physical books help me focus easier. There is also, of course, the ebook and audiobook collection that I use regularly, though hold times are quite long, but I’m always surprised at how many titles are available and how up to date the catalogue is.

I try to go to the library at least once a week & YES, if books are available I put them on hold months in advance 😆📚 I try to keep up with reading what I borrow, but often end up checking out so many & only reading a few at a time, but I’ve heard its good for library stats if there’s always people checking out books, so I find that as a win 😂🙌💖

I completely agree! Libraries are such an amazing resource and also just a lovely place to spend an hour or two browsing the shelves!

I use the library all the time. I used to work at the local branch that I frequent, so it’s also a great place to catch up with old friends for me.

My children and I use our local library regularly. It’s great for new titles for children and is located right in the centre of our town in the leisure centre, so it’s really accessible.

That’s great! I’ve lived in a couple of places where the closest library was 45 min away and it was really inconvenient because I tend to drop by atleast twice a week. My current library is just down the road though, and it’s so convenient!
