Let’s Talk Bookish: Books As Gifts

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts. Today topic is Books As Gifts.

Do books make good gifts? Do you ever give or receive books as gifts? Would you rather receive a book from your wish list or be surprised?

Books make wonderful gifts – if you’re certain of both the taste and collection of the person receiving them. Generally speaking, I prefer not to receive books as gifts because I’m very particular about my collection of physical books and which titles and editions I prefer to own. Whenever I have received a book as a gift in the past, it has always been either a title I specifically asked for, or one I was allowed to pick out for my gift. I’d honestly be much happier to receive a gift card to the bookstore rather than a book itself unless the person knows my reading taste and wish list very well.

What would you do if you didn’t like the book you were given?

The polite thing of course – just say thank you and figure out what to do with it later. If it’s a gift, I’d probably make some effort to try and read it unless it’s something that’s really not to my taste.

Would you expect someone to read a book you got them right away?

Not at all! Personally, I would almost never read a book I just got straight away unless it’s a new release that I’ve been specifically waiting to get. At any point in time, I have atleast my next five to ten reads decided and picked from my TBR and changing this would play havoc with my blogging schedule. Each person has their own way of reading books, and not everyone has the time to sit down with a book everyday, so I certainly wouldn’t expect anyone to immediately read a book I got them, though I would love it if they did let me know when read it so I could talk about it with them!

I don’t typically read books I’ve received right away, either. I typically have a large TBR pile to get through, and I’m a mood reader. So I don’t ask people if they’ve read the books I’ve given them. Maybe they will or maybe they won’t. It’s the thought of the gift that counts, right?

Agreed, I’m a mood reader too, so even if I plan to read a certain book, I may not actually get to it if I’m not feeling like reading that genre. Thanks for reading and commenting!
